Life is fraught with decisions. For example, in the next 10 seconds, you must decide whether you will read the rest of this article or not. Maybe you’ve got more urgent things to do right now. But then again maybe you’ll read this article to put off those more urgent things (welcome, fellow procrastinators!). Or, maybe you’re reading it because you want to learn something, in which case you’ve already made a good decision.
The point is, different people deal with decision-making in different ways. National Basketball Association All-Star Gilbert Arenas, for example, is said to have decided which team he would sign with by flipping a coin. Then there are those like Amy Wrzesniewski, an assistant professor at New York University. Wrzesniewski can become paralyzed deciding what to wear each morning. So, before the school year starts, she plans out every outfit she will wear for each day she teaches over the entire semester. Then she posts the list in her closet. “Otherwise”, she says with a laugh, “I would just stare at my clothes every morning for 45 minutes.”

A questão é que pessoas diferentes lidam com a tomada de decisão de formas diferentes. Diz-se que o astro da Associação Nacional de Basquetebol Gilbert Arenas, por exemplo, decidiu com que time ele assinaria jogando uma moeda. Além disso há aqueles como Amy Wrzesniewski, uma professora assistente na Universidade de Nova York. Wrzesniewski pode ficar paralisada decidindo o que usar a cada manhã. Assim, antes de o ano letivo começar, ela planeja todos os trajes que irá usar para cada dia em que dá aula durante o semestre inteiro. Então ela afixa a lista em seu armário. “De outra forma”, ela diz com uma risada, “eu simplesmente fitaria minhas roupas cada manhã por 45 minutos.”
